When a person is  exposed to a traumatic event, one can feel fear, helplessness, or horror.  It can also happen that victims re-experience the event through memories and nightmares.

Victims avoid anything that reminds them of the trauma such as for instance numbing of emotional responsiveness. If not treated and when victims are chronically over-aroused, quick to anger and easily startled,  post traumatic stress disorder can  manifest.  It is therefore of utmost importance when a traumatic event occurs that the person receive assistance in the form of counselling as soon as possible to prevent the long term negative effect that trauma can have on the person and/or family.

Although one cannot take away the trauma of the person or family the counsellor can assist the family to cope in a more functional way.
